Leadership Insight #22 – Leadership Influence

Influence represents an essential element of effective leadership. While authority may be associated with one’s position or responsibilities within an organization, true influence is established through credibility, trust, and the ability to motivate others toward collective objectives.

Dr. Mahdi Alston underscores that impactful leaders emphasise cultivating strong relationships in tandem with developing sound strategies. Leaders who practice active listening, communicate concisely, and consistently demonstrate respect are able to deepen their influence across organisational levels.

Maintaining influence requires consistent conduct. Employees and colleagues observe a leader’s actions over time; when leaders reliably exemplify alignment between their behaviours and the organisation’s values, their influence naturally expands.

An important aspect of influence involves empowering others. Leaders who encourage participation and recognise individual achievements enhance team members’ sense of ownership in organisational successes.

In conclusion, leadership influence equips individuals to guide organisations not merely through formal authority, but through the establishment of trust and a shared vision.
